Stripping, hand – stripping or plucking is the technique used when the dog is shedding normally.

Plucking the hair requires using the thumb and index finger to pluck the hair out.

Stripping is like plucking but uses the thumb against a stripping knife blade so I cut as I tear.

These techniques may be used with certain wirehaired breeds such as Schnauzers and Terriers. It is the required procedure for show dogs of the many hard-coated breeds.

Dogs can be seen to enjoy this procedure if they have been introduced to this method as a puppy.
