travel sickness

German Shepherd Dog In Car

Anxiety, excitability, nervousness or simply apprehension are the most common cause of travel sickness in dogs and cats than true motion sickness, which is less common but just as severe and upsetting for both pet and owner.

For anxiety based travel sickness Dorwest produce two products which will help calm and relax your pet.

Scullcap & Valerian tablets or Organic Valerian compound. If a dog or cat is not showing signs of anxiety or nervousness but vomits or has extreme salvation then this is often true motion sickness and Digestive Supplement tablets can be given prior to the journey to settle the stomach.

Dog In Car

Nervousness and anxiety especially affects young animals for whom travelling is a strange new experience but this behaviour can also be carried on into adulthood which can make the condition more ingrained and may take longer to improve. Making steps to desensitise the dog to the car is recommended by simply using the stationary vehicle for play, relaxation and even feeding occasionally, providing it is safe to do so. Then try this with the engine running while the vehicle is stationary and finally introduce short journeys. This will enable your dog to accept the car as part of a normal environment, and these Dorwest products will help to give the dog or cat a sense of wellbeing and help them feel more relaxed. When carried out over a period of time it will help build up confidence and is ideal if adopted from an early age.
